4. The nurse who evaluated me for the program told me that I need a surrogate. What does that mean?

A surrogate is a person that has the time and ability to help you with the management of your PCA program. At the time of your evaluation for PCA services, our nurse believed you would require help to manage your PCA program.

This does not mean you relinquish your independence; you are still in charge and the surrogate helps you out with things you find it difficult to do yourself. If you don’t agree with the nurse, you can appeal this decision
